LHS Athletic School Policy
Students will need to get a physical if they have not had one this year for previous sports participation. The CONSEQUENCES of behavior can be obtained at your local high school office.

At its best, athletic competition can hold intrinsic values for our society. It is a symbol of a great ideal, pursuing victory with honor. The love of sports is deeply embedded in our national consciousness. The values of millions of participants and spectators are directly and dramatically influenced by the values conveyed by organized sports. In the belief that the impact of sports can and should enhance the character and uplift the ethics of the state, we have established a framework of principles and a common language of values that should be adopted and practiced widely. California Interscholastic Federation Cardinal Athletic Principles
To be of maximum effectiveness, the Athletic Program will:
- Be a well-coordinated part of the secondary school curriculum.
- Justify the use of the tax funds and school facilities because of the educational aims achieved.
- Be based on the spirit of amateurism.
- Be conducted by secondary school authorities.
- Provide opportunities for many students to participate in a wide variety of sports in every sport season.
- Foster training in conduct, game ethics and sportsmanship for participants and spectators.
- Include a well-balanced program of intramural sports.
- Engender respect for local, state and national rules and policies under which the school program is conducted.
Code of Ethics
It is the duty of all concerned with High School Athletics :
- To emphasize the proper ideals of sportsmanship, ethical conduct and fair play.
- To eliminate all possibilities which tend to destroy the best values of the game.
- To stress the values derived from playing the game fairly.
- To show cordial courtesy to visiting teams and officials.
- To establish a happy relationship between visitors and host.
- To respect the integrity and judgment of sports officials.
- To achieve a thorough understanding and acceptance of the rules of the game and the standards of eligibility.
- To encourage leadership, use of initiative, and good judgment by the players on a team.
- To recognize that the purpose of athletics is to promote the physical, mental, social and emotional well being of the individual papers.
- To remember that an athletic contest is only a game – not a matter of life an death for player, coach, school, officials, fan, community, state, or nation.
Sportsmanship Standards

CIF and the schools in sierra county intend to promote the ideals of sportsmanship, ethical conduct, and fair play by:
- Giving annual recognition to schools, which consistently demonstrate good sportsmanship on the part of spectators and participants.
- Establishing expectations and consequences of spectator and participant behavior at events.

Interscholastic Athletic Regulation
I. Athletic Eligibility/Agreement Policy
In order to develop themselves as students and citizens, and so that they can fulfill their duties in the most appropriate fashion, students must discipline themselves both mentally and emotionally. This is especially true of Plumas Unified School District student-athletes, for athletic competition is more than contests between individuals representing different schools. It is, as well, a means of learning a way of life which exemplifies the concepts of honesty, fair play, hard work, and dedication to standards of the highest caliber relative to personal and team conduct. Moreover, it must be remembered that representing one’s school in athletic competition is a privilege, and not a right.
The student-athlete is a representative of his/her family and his/her school. Therefore:
A. In the classroom a student-athlete:
- meets the academic and citizenship standards of the school
- shows respect for teachers and fellow students
- maintains a good attendance record
- makes arrangements for all assignments missed due to a contest.
B. On the campus a student-athlete:
- helps to promote school spirit
- sets a good example for others to follow
- works for the improvement of the school
- is respectful of personal and school property.
C. At a contest a student-athlete:
- respects the rules and the decisions of the officials
- is modest in victory and gracious in defeat
- controls one’s temper at all times
- knows that profanity and illegal tactics are sign of poor sportsmanship and may result in a technical four or ejection
- shows respect for visiting teams and their equipment.
D. On trips a student-athlete:
- conducts oneself in such a manner that he/she is a good representative of the community, the school, and the team
- helps take care of the team’s equipment; respects the regulations as well as the property of the host campus.
II. Athletic Eligibility
A. Student-athletes must meet C.I.F. league and Sierra-Plumas Joint unified School District eligibility requirements.
B. Student-athletes must pass a physical examination given by a physician.
C. Student-athletes must purchase C.I.F. insurance or show other evidence of coverage to replace C.I.F. insurance that affords the required coverage.
D. Student-athletes may not compete on an outside (of school) team in the same sport during the season.
E. In order to be eligible for participation in interscholastic athletics, students in grades six through twelve shall have earned a minimum of a 2.0 g.p.a. The g.p.a. and determination of eligibility shall be based upon quarter and semester grades. For purposes of this policy, quarter and semester grades are defined as follows: first quarter, first semester, third quarter, second semester. Determination of eligibility will be made upon student grades at these four grading periods. The second Sunday following the end of the quarter will be the date to determine eligibility. Students subject to this policy may receive no F or D grades during the defined grading period.
F. Days of eligibility for determining length of suspension for extra/co-curricular activities are defined as practice/game days.
Practice Rule and Regulations
A. Coaches are permitted to have rules and regulations more stringent than the Extra/Co-Curricular Eligibility Agreement if they submit such rules and regulations to the principal for prior approval.
B. Vacation period practices are up to the individual coach, with exceptions noted in this section.
C. Practices are NEVER to be held on Sundays, Christmas, or Thanksgiving Day. Discretion should be used on other legal holidays.
D. Practices prior to the start of school in August are permitted for the fall sports, subject to CIF.
E. Varsity and junior varsity football squads may practice for no more than 10 days in the spring, commencing no sooner than the day immediately following the conclusion of the regular spring sports season, subject to CIF.
F. Winter sports team practices may not commence prior to Nov 1. Fluctuations may occur due to weekends.

Supervision and Transportation
A. Athletes are never to be left unsupervised at any time.
B. The head Varsity Coach is responsible for the conduct of all athletes being transported on his/her bus, and must work closely with the bus driver to see that all athletes are properly supervised. Problems with the individual bus drivers must be reported to the principal.
C. Athletes MUST utilize school transportation. However, if the proper release forms from the office are used, athletes may go home with their parents or parent designee. The forms must be properly completed and returned to the AD prior to the student leaving for the event. Parents may complete the form after the game if the coach knows the parent.
D. It is very important that the last coach leaving the building secure that building. You must stay until all students have left for home.
E. All coaches will ride school transportation unless permission is obtained from the principal.
Spectators and Participants Are Expected to:
- Help us make visitors fell welcome with friendly and courteous treatment.
- Help us maintain our high standards of sportsmanship as guests at our school.
- Accept the rules of the contest, decisions of the officials, and directions from personnel on duty with a positive and cooperative spirit.
- Be friendly and positive with their behavior, including comments, yells, gestures, signs, and by not throwing objects.
- Refrain from rude remarks, insults, profanity, or comments, which reflect negatively on any person’s race, sex, religion, ethnic origin, age, handicap, school, community, or esteem.
- Leave whistles, horns, megaphones, and other mechanical noisemakers and amplifiers outside of the sports arena.
- Respect the direction and leadership of the pep squads.
- Accept victory or defeat graciously.
